Along the way, we discuss the fundamentals of exposure control, as well as the best ways to store and share your images.

Advanced Digital SLR

Start to take more control of your Digital SLR. This in-depth 4-hour course with a 1-hour break for lunch will show you how to master your camera's light meter, use apertures and shutter speeds to your advantage, select the right lens for your needs, and start to explore shooting with flash. File formats, ISO, and filters will also be discussed.

Essentials of Photoshop Editing

Whether you're using Adobe Photoshop Elements or Adobe Photoshop CS, there are basic tools and techniques that are essential in editing your images. This 4-hour class with a 1-hour break for lunch will help you understand the basics of these programs, which tools you will use, and which you won't. Topics will include:

  • Cropping
  • Making selections
  • Adjusting color & tone
  • Spot corrections
  • Layers
  • JPEG v RAW editing
  • Techniques for improving portraits

Students are encouraged to bring their own laptop - computers will not be provided.

Introduction to RAW Shooting & Workflow

All Digital SLR (and some higher-end point & shoot) cameras can produce RAW files. Are you using this format yet? If so, are you using it to its fullest potential? Our Raw Shooting and Workflow class will help you sort out the differences between RAW and JPEG formats, and how best to edit and organize your photos using RAW editing software. This class will focus primarily on RAW workflow with Adobe Lightroom, but other applications will be discussed.

Introduction to Lightroom

Adobe's Lightroom combines powerful tools for organizing, editing, and sharing your images into one program. This two-hour course explores how to get the most out of each of these facets of Lightroom, as well as how best to organize your images, the unique characteristics of the RAW file, and how Lightroom offers seamless integration with Adobe's Photoshop products. Topics will include:

  • Importing and exporting images
  • Managing catalogs
  • How to use metadata
  • Understanding the Develop module
  • Sharing your images as prints, books, and slideshows

Students are encouraged (but not required) to bring their computers with a version of Lightroom installed.

Introduction to Accessory Flash

Join us as we explore the best ways to use your accessory flash, on or off camera. We'll discuss flash exposure modes, the best methods for triggering your flash when off camera, as well as a variety of accessories that can improve your photos when using flash. Two hours of instruction, followed by a one-hour hands-on session with equipment.

Introduction to Studio Lighting

Our Introduction to Studio Lighting class will teach you how to use your large strobe, or continuous lighting equipment to its fullest potential. Using studio lighting can be intimidating at first, and the variety of accessories and techniques involved means there's always something new to learn. Our class will the discuss the advantages (and disadvantages) of both continuous and strobe lighting, as well as how to choose the best accessories to complement the way you'll be using your lighting. Topics include:

  • Choosing between umbrellas and soft boxes
  • Understanding studio flash power settings
  • Options for triggering studio flashes,
  • Achieving proper exposure (with and without a light/flash meter)
  • Techniques for portrait and product lighting.

Two hours of instruction will be followed by a one-hour hands-on session with a variety of studio lighting equipment.
